Pet Allergies in Oklahoma City: Dog Playing Outside

Pet Allergies and Dermatology Treatments

Pet allergies and skin conditions are usually connected. If your pet is allergic to pollen, mold, grass, or something in their diet, they are also likely to have a skin disorder. At Hefner Road Animal Hospital in Oklahoma City, our doctors and staff are able to handle a variety of skin conditions and make allergies more manageable for your pet, and for you!

How to Tell If Your Pet Has an Allergy or Skin Problem

Pets tend to hide their pain and discomfort, but you can tell if they have a skin problem by the following:

  • Frequent scratching
  • Skin that is red and inflamed
  • Missing patches of fur
  • Dandruff
  • A dull, greasy coat
  • Dry, scaly patches of skin
  • Sores and scabs under the fur
  • Chewing and licking at the feet and other areas over and over

Itching is a primary indicator of allergies, and if your pet spends a lot of time scratching, they could also be damaging their skin barrier and increasing their risk of infection.

Conditions We Regularly Treat

When your pet has allergies or a skin problem, it’s not just a hassle for them—it can be irritating for you, too! But knowing they have a problem is the first step towards identifying and treating it.

Some of the skin conditions our doctors are experienced in treating include:

  • Genetic conditions of the skin and coat
  • Allergic skin disease (allergic dermatitis)
  • Autoimmune/immune-mediated skin disorders
  • Infectious and parasitic skin diseases (mange, flea allergy dermatitis, etc.)
  • Both acute and chronic ear diseases

Can My Pet’s Condition be Fully Treated?

There is no permanent cure for pet allergies. However, we can help you manage the symptoms and any resulting secondary infections so your pet can lead a more comfortable life. Diagnosing their skin disorder may involve blood work, cytology, and allergy testing. Additionally, treatment depends on our findings and what is most compatible with your pet’s health and temperament.

Some of our treatment options are:

  • A hypoallergenic diet (if your pet has a food allergy)
  • Oral or injectable medication to relieve itching and inflammation
  • Immunotherapy
  • Topical medication

Hefner Road is really a good place!  We've been taking our animals there for a long time, they treat you and your furry friend real nice.

Dr Purvis & his staff are wonderful! He has been my doggie doctor since adopting 2 rescues in 2000! They are attentive to your animal's needs and show them so much love! Dr. Purvis helped me make painful decisions when my Estee-girl had an inoperable cancer and his loving staff held her with me when it was time to say good-bye. Lucy loves boarding and thinks of HRAH as her second home. Thank you Dr. P & Staff

Evie loves coming to see you!  When she knows we are going for a ride, she wants to stop and come into the office!

We have been with Dr. Purvis around 20 years and wouldn't think of using any other vet.  He and the staff are caring, friendly and always professional.  We also use the grooming facility monthly. The Pet Resort is the best in town!

I have trusted the care of one spoiled schnauzer and two cats to HRAH for over 10 years.  Dr. Purvis and the entire staff at HRAH are fantastic!  They have great customer service and offer exceptional animal care.  Our schnauzer attends daycare during the workweek and I feel extremely fortunate to have such a competent and caring group available for her.

Enjoyed my experience there. Dr. Cooper and his team were friendly and took care of my puppy. Very affordable, definitely recommend.

I called HRAH because my former vet and my groomer kept telling me that my bichon had fleas and that's why she was literally scratching holes into herself. I knew she didn't have fleas and suspected it was allergies. I was so relieved that I finally found a vet who knew immediately that the problem was "bichon skin" and NOT fleas! I especially appreciated that the exam room was sparkling clean and didn't stink like nasty dirty pet odor. Very impressed---they are my new vet!

Best place for our sweet babies! That Jacklyn is so caring and loves our babies as much as we do!

Very nice and accommodating. Staff is very friendly. They helped my doggie feel better on the same day I called to make an appt. Love them!
